What's an Original Shipper?

Original Shipper: What It Means and How to Record It in BlueTrace

Shellfish traceability laws in every U.S. state require you to record the original shipper for any product you handle. This information must also appear on your shellfish tags—especially when you are not the original shipper.

What is the “Original Shipper”?

The original shipper is the first certified dealer (registered on the FDA's Interstate Certified Shellfish Shippers List) to handle the product in the supply chain. They may be:

  • The harvester/farmer, or

  • The first dealer who purchased directly from that harvester.

How to Enter the Original Shipper in BlueTrace

BlueTrace Distributor App (Receiving Purchases)

When receiving product:

  1. Every lot received must have a “Vendor Received From.” This represents who you purchased or received the product from.

  2. BlueTrace automatically sets the Original Shipper using that vendor’s dealer certification. This is a starting point only.

  3. If the shellfish tag lists a different certification number, you must update the Original Shipper to match the tag. (This is common when your vendor is not the actual original dealer.)

BlueTrace Distributor App (Shipping Lots)

  1. When you are fulfilling a customer order by shipping lots, the Original Shipper is already saved on the lot - no need to re-enter it anywhere
  2. On the Shipment, YOUR cert may need to be entered, this will print at the top of your shellfish tag if you're retagging

BlueTrace Tag Printing App (Harvest Log)

When entering a lot in the Harvest Log:

  • You can manually set the Original Shipper as part of the lot details.

  • Whatever you enter will print directly on the tag and be exportable in your harvest log to meet regulatory requirements.
